01 — The method

Every lesson,
the same three moves.

  1. Check-in

How’s your week been? Some weeks want loud, some want quiet — I shape the lesson around whichever one you need.

  2. Play-along

We play together from minute five. Music gets learned the way a band learns — not like an interrogation.

  3. The Dig

One experiment toward your own material — rewriting a riff you love, improvising over a groove, arranging the song stuck in your head. I’m listening for what makes you lean in.

And one move that happens after you leave — The Playback. We record as we go, and within the hour what you played lands on your WhatsApp. The listening-back happens at home, in your own time, where you can actually hear it: that lag isn’t a mistake, that’s a feel. Lesson time stays for playing.

02 — The honest comparison

YouTube is a brilliant teacher who can’t hear you.

  • YouTube shows technique. We hear what you’re actually doing, and answer it in real time.
  • YouTube has no calendar. We have a standing appointment. You’ll keep it. That’s most of the battle.
  • YouTube trains your hands. We train your ear — with someone in the room to play along with.
  • YouTube teaches someone else’s style. Our entire job is noticing yours, and building on it.

03 — Start here, free

The Sound Check.
Forty-five minutes.
Free.

No signup, no obligation, no “levels assessment.” You play within the first five minutes — even if “playing” is generous. Total beginners very welcome; three notes is a start.

  1. The setupTea. One question: what made you book? Then I shut up and listen.
  2. First contactYou play anything. I play along within sixty seconds. Nobody demonstrates at you.
  3. The digTwo quick improv games. Meanwhile I’m quietly logging your instincts.
  4. The handoverIf you want to continue, you pick one of two weekly slots on the spot. If you don’t, that’s fine too.

You leave with

  • Your Sound Print — a handwritten card naming three things you already do that are unmistakably yours. It goes on the fridge. This is what it looks like:
  • Your founding catalogue number — the first students through the door take UF-001 to UF-010, reserved for you whether you continue or not.
  • The playback — a recording of what you played today, plus a 60-second homework clip, on your WhatsApp before you reach the car.
  • Two named weekly slots — Tuesday or Thursday, not “maybe sometime.”
SOUND PRINT · UF-00_ 1. Drags the beat. On purpose. 2. Minor-key instinct. 3. Rhythm-first player. OBSERVED IN 45 MINUTES — NOT TAUGHT

04 — The label

Every student gets
a catalogue number.

Unfret runs like a one-man record label and the students are the roster. The catalogue is empty right now — on purpose. In your first term you write a piece of your own (four bars is plenty), we record it in the studio, and it goes out under your number. The first ten students take UF-001 to UF-010 and keep them for life.

Every release is a page your family can actually share — proof of progress you can hear, not a school report. And twice a year: a Release Night at a local venue. Your song, actual speakers, your people in the crowd. Performing is optional. Being heard isn’t.

05 — The boring bits

I have never touched a guitar.

Perfect. No bad habits to undo. We start with three notes and a groove, and you’ll be playing along with me in the first ten minutes.

I don’t own a guitar.

Come anyway — I have spares. I’ll help you buy your first one properly instead of expensively.

Am I too old?

Ages 5 to 70. If you’re reading this, you qualify.

Where?

The studio’s in Seaton, EX12 2EE. School partnerships around the triangle.

What’s the catch?

No catch. The first lesson sells itself or I’ve failed and you’ve lost 45 minutes. That’s my risk, not yours.

Can I ask you something first?

Of course. WhatsApp me — ask anything before you book anything.

First one’s free.

The Sound Check. Forty-five minutes, a cup of tea, and a handwritten map of what already makes you sound like you. No card, no account — one slot with your name on it.

Or call 07523 757260 and we’ll do it for you.
